Excuse me… WTF is Mindful Conditioning?! πŸ™‹πŸ»

Intimidated by the gym? Not sure what to do when faced with free weights, yet know your body could use some strength training?

Lack motivation to engage with the kettlebells gathering dust that have been decorating your kitchen floor since COVID times?

Uninspired by yet another online class, lesson or Zoom session? (Let’s be honest, there’s already too much screen time in our lives.)

This is far from a traditional strength and conditioning class. It’s not a circuit class and it’s definitely not “yoga”…

Enter Thursdays at 10:30am — Mindful Conditioning at Trailing Pebbles Clinic, Chagford. Can those two words even appear in the same sentence? You might be wondering…!

The idea behind the class is simple: we take mindfulness components learned in practices like yoga (no prior experience needed) and apply them into a training setting.

The number of injuries I’ve seen, treated and even inflicted on myself by being attached to numbers, kilograms and repetitions! But it’s a totally different game when you stay present.

Even when the legs shake.

Even when the mind wants to switch off.

Even when all you can think about is the cake and coffee you’ll reward yourself with afterward (while the post class feel-good hormones rush through your body).Yes please!

WHAT WE DO

The class focuses on functional movements our bodies were designed to do, which modern life slowly erodes: squatting, overhead strength, pushing and pulling, rotation and hip, shoulder and spinal mobility.

We use body weight and external loads such as kettlebells, dumbbells and resistance bands. There’s a mix of traditional training methods and some more off-piste exercises to give both body and mind variety.

It’s also a great supplement for yoga enthusiasts. Yoga alone doesn’t offer the variety of movements and strength work for your body. For example, pulling to counter all that pushing in chaturangas, strengthening the hamstrings to avoid “yoga butt” (yes painful, not pretty).

The vibe

All of this happens in a non-intimidating, light-hearted, fun environment. Because, let’s face it, we’d all rather be having that coffee and cake afterward… (well, maybe!) 😬
